From Reddit Atheist thread. Love this comment by Finsternis
I'm an atheist. Buddhism as I practice it is definitely a philosophy, not a religion. Other people practice it differently, and that's OK. What atheists should know about Buddhism is that it's basically 2,500 years of concentrated knowledge on how to hack your mind. You don't have to believe anything supernatural to be a Buddhist if you don't want to. The nicest thing is that other Buddhists don't come up to you and say "you're doing it WRONG, you have to do it MY way." You are perfectly allowed - and encouraged - to pick and choose which parts you agree with and which parts you want to follow. At it's most fundamental core, it's really nothing more than a system for figuring out things about your mind, and life - with a lot of suggestions along the way. One can argue about whether it's a region or not, but in the end, the real answer is "who cares? do it the way you want."
