Then I came across this statistic, thanks to Reddit.
Human Rights WatchNo Escape: Male Rape In U.S. Prisons. Part VII. Anomaly or Epidemic: The Incidence of Prisoner-on-Prisoner Rape.; estimates that 100,000–140,000 violent male-male rapes occur in U.S. prisons annually; compare with FBI statistics that estimated 90,000 violent male-female rapes occur annually. In other words, more men are violently raped in prison than women are violently raped out of prison.
Reddit user Lokiikol summed it up well:
This is one of the worst things about the incarceration system in [the US]. People seem to think that people who get raped in prison are getting what they deserved, but in reality it is only serving to harden and toxify the inmates' environment, leading to antisocial behaviors and eventually decreasing their likelihood of becoming a functioning member of society. Prisons are meant to separate and rehabilitate people who have committed crimes in the eyes of society, and now are instead serving the purpose of providing a corporate-profit structure and networking center for criminals.
Rape is a serious thing, and no matter what a person has done in their life, it is NEVER deserved. It demeans every basic human instinct and is an insidious form of brutalization. This should be a bigger issue than it is.
