Anti-asylum seeker drivel

I'm ashamed that a member of my family member sent this to me today, thinking it might be funny.

It is particularly offensive and full of racist untruths. Almost every person who applies for asylum has good cause to do so and has gone through hell that  I would hope to never see. These same people leave parents, siblings and children behind and pay tens of thousands to people smugglers (who are the truly evil bastards) in the slim hope of being able to make a new start in a safe land… exactly the same thing the ‘settlers’ of the US and Israel did. Many die on the way. Heck, you might even consider the fact that most boatpeople are not convicted criminals – unlike most of the first batch of white people who invaded this land.

Worse, for a country where all but a tiny (and sadly dwindling) number people are immigrants or the children of immigrants Australia take in far less asylum seekers that we should. For example in 2008, there were approximately 15.2 million forcibly displaced refugees around the world and Australia had 161 boat people arrive.
